The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights was developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality Healthcare in 2007 and 2008, and updated in August 2019.
It outlines your rights when seeking or receiving healthcare services in any health setting across Australia. This includes your right to receive safe, high quality healthcare provided with professional care, skill and competence, and your right to be provided with care that respects your culture, beliefs and values. For more information please read the Nexus Quality and Safety Policy.
As a patient, you also have some responsibilities. These include being actively involved in your own care after you are discharged from the hospital, and providing all the necessary information to your doctor and hospital staff so they can give you the right treatment and advice.
Copies of the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights can be downloaded in a number of languages here.
