Canberra Private Hospital Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Jennifer Green honoured by the Australian Orthopaedic Association
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jennifer Green, who practices at Canberra Private Hospital, was recently honoured by the Australian Orthopaedic Association with its Diversity Award for 2024. Dr Green was the Board Member responsible for driving the inaugural AOA Diversity Strategy (2018-2020).
Orthopaedic surgery is the least diverse medical specialty globally, with low representation of women, cultural minorities and LGBTQI+ community members. This lack of representation has been shown to result in significant healthcare disparities, including poorer access to orthopaedic care and poorer outcomes for these under-represented groups.
Dr Green, an orthopaedic hand and wrist surgeon, is the founder of the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance, a US-based not-for-profit organisation with almost 2000 members. The mission of the IODA is to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in orthopaedic surgery worldwide, as well as to network advocacy groups from every region to share successful strategies and drive global discussion. In February 2024, IODA was awarded the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 3 Year Diversity Partnership. More than 40 Orthopaedic Associations around the world have signed the IODA Charter to commit to developing a strategy to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in orthopaedics in their organisation.
Dr Green was the first recipient of the Australian Medical Association Diversity Award in 2022 in recognition of her national and international contributions to drive diversity, equity and inclusion. Dr Green actively promotes diversity, equity and inclusion through international and local scientific meeting presentations, publication of collaborative, evidence-based articles, contributions to educational webinars and podcasts, assisting in the development of diversity strategies, promoting the events and successes of orthopaedic advocacy societies, speaking at medical student events and through active advocacy across IODA’s social media platforms. She is passionate about reducing healthcare disparity by increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in healthcare.
Nexus congratulates Dr Green on her outstanding achievements and recognition from her peers. We are incredibly proud to count her as one of our VMOs.
