What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder where the cornea, which is normally round, thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This abnormal shape deflects light as it enters the eye, causing distorted vision. In Australia, keratoconus affects approximately 1 in 84 individuals, particularly among young adults. The condition can significantly impact quality of life, affecting daily activities such as driving, working, and social interactions.
Significance of the CAIRS Procedure
The CAIRS procedure represents a significant advancement in the treatment of keratoconus – it involves the insertion of small, clear, crescent-shaped segment from donor corneal tissue into the patient’s own cornea to reshape it and improve vision with reduced invasiveness and quicker recovery.
Special Equipment and Training
Performing the CAIRS procedure requires specialised equipment, including advanced laser technology and precision surgical instruments. Surgeons must undergo specific training to master the technique, ensuring they can accurately create the corneal channels and insert the segments with precision. Manningham Private Hospital is the first and currently only Hospital in Victoria offering this state-of-the-art procedure.
“A/Prof Elaine Chong’s successful completion of her first CAIRS surgery at Manningham Private Hospital is a testament to our commitment to providing the highest quality of care and latest advancements in medical technology,” said Claire Thompson, General Manager and Director of Nursing at Manningham Private. “We are excited to be the only hospital in Victoria to offer this innovative procedure to our patients, improving their quality of life and vision.”
“Performing the first CAIRS surgery in Victoria was a significant achievement,” said Dr. Nathan Wong. “I am proud to be part of a team that is at the forefront of ophthalmic surgery, bringing new hope to those affected by keratoconus. MPH has been a key player in this regard, and their culture is one completely centred on patient care.”
