Kogarah Private ophthalmologists partnering with the Young Optometrists Group
Kogarah Private Hospital recently partnered with the Young Optometry Group to host an interactive educational event. Since its inception in 2012, the group has been supporting optometrists and students by providing a dynamic and progressive environment to advance the optometry profession.
We were delighted to have 20 optometrists from Sydney and surrounds hear from two of our VMO ophthalmologists, Dr Michael Rossiter-Thornton and Dr Cheryl Au. Dr Rossiter-Thornton presented on the topic of multifocal lenses including a discussion on the use of secondary sulcus lenses. This was followed by Dr Au who presented an overview of the management of diabetic retinopathy.
Following the presentations, the group was split into two, where a hands on demonstration of foreign body removal under a slit lamp was performed. Having used eyes crafted from agar, then implanted with tiny metal fragments, a 25-gauge needle and burr were gently used to scrape away the filings, which in a very realistic way had started rusting in the agar.
The photographs below show our engaged group removing the foreign bodies, and absorbing the knowledge of our ophthalmologists.
We are looking forward to running a second similar session in July, to manage the strong demand we have seen for this practical session.
